The 5 Basic Makeup Essentials
Updated: Jul 28, 2019
Finding the right makeup that will have your best features shining through is never an easy task. Walk into a drugstore and you’ll have a thousand products screaming at you, and somehow you fall into the trap... thinking you need everything to look like you’ve your A game on.
If you’re new to this whole makeup sorcery, we’ve shortlisted a list of basic products you can start experimenting with.
A good primer sets your makeup for the rest of your day, so you wouldn’t want to miss this step. We highly recommend the Innisfree No Sebum Blur Primer, retailing at $16.70. The consistency is light on your skin, blurs out your pores and helps you achieve an even skin tone. Primers also ensures your next few layers of makeup glide on your skin easily. Some people even find this sufficient as the base itself if they’re going for the natural look.
The texture of a foundation may be too thick for your skin if you’re new to make up, so we recommend going with a lighter BB cushion. We love the cushion range from AprilSkin. Retailing at $30 on average, it helps you achieve a natural finish without breaking the bank. Most BB cushions are buildable, so you can put on a few more layers to achieve the coverage you like.
It’s hard to go wrong with mascara… but we generally recommend waterproof mascara because it keeps your lashes curled for a much longer time. You wouldn’t want your lashes to look droopy mid-day! The Volum' Express® The Falsies® Waterproof Mascara from Maybelline, retailing at $19.90, does the trick and you can put on two coats if you prefer a bolder look.
Trust us, you wouldn’t want to be slapping on BB cream without having any pop of colour - which is exactly what a blusher gives! Some blush on your cheeks keep you looking radiant. For a softer look, choose something closer to your skin tone. When in doubt, just go for a coral hue! The GALifornia Powder Blush from Benefit, retailing at $28 at Sephora, works great.
Lip Balm / Lipstick
For starters, we think a tinted lip balm will be sufficient. If you’re going for a lipstick, always remember to apply a layer of balm first because lipsticks can be very drying. The Nivea Peach Shine Balm, retailing at $4.10 in Guardian works great for beginners, and does not stain your teeth! You do have to touch up after meals and drinks, though.
These 5 essentials are all you need as a springboard into the world of make up! You do not need highlighters, bronzers, concealers, contour or eyeshadow palettes at this juncture. Experiment with the basics, find out what works best, and then add on to your collection.
