Cheerio Christmas Day 3: Kindred Teas

For the 3rd day of Cheerio Christmas, we have with us a well-loved homegrown brand, that serves blooming teas - Kindred Teas (@kindredteas). Inspired by precious moments with loved ones, Kindred Teas brings you really beautiful, and unique brews.

Kindred Teas started in 2017 as a local, artisanal tea brand that specialises in inspired teas. Much hard work and thought was put into the brand, taking over 1.5 years from conceptualisation to the eventual launch. We had the opportunity to speak with the Founder & Director of Kindred Teas, Madelene, to find out more about what goes on behind-the-scenes. To all budding entrepreneurs, we hope this feature leaves you inspired!

Q: Is your business idea tied to any personal story?

A: Personally, tea has always brings back wonderful memories of times spent with family and friends. Whenever I think of tea, I think of these memories and they always involved loved ones, hence the name Kindred Teas. Tea is as social a drink as coffee. I wanted people to start saying “let’s grab tea” instead of “let’s grab coffee”. To me, tea is about slowing down and appreciating the moment, unlike coffee, where it feels more on the go. It’s the perfect drink to roster relationships over. I also wanted to create a brand that was suitable for gifting.

Q: How has 2019 been for your business, and what are you looking forward to in 2020?

A: 2019 has been the best year for us. Our sales have steadily increased since and I believe we have become quite well known in the local tea scene for our interesting flavours and beautiful packaging. In 2020, we are looking to better our tea knowledge and creating brand new, creative blends.

Q: Out of all the products you retail, which is your personal favourite and why?

A: It is difficult for me to choose a favourite, but I can recommend our flavoured teas that I formulated myself, such as Elder & Cream Black Tea and Maple Vanilla Green Tea. These teas are really interesting and you won’t find these flavours anywhere else.

I guess if I had to choose a tea that I could drink every day, I would pick Dong Ding Oolong. It’s a beautiful, traditional high mountain oolong from Taiwan that we curated after taste testing a massive batch of oolongs.

Q: What would you say to someone who’s looking to start their own business?

A: I would say to be prepared for a tough journey, because it is definitely not going to be easy… but it will be worth it! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve shed tears and sweat, but the hard work really does pay off, especially when you see others enjoy what you’ve created.

Do your research and find a gap in the market you know you can fill, and create something that’s unique to yourself. It may not be a brand new product, it can be how you package it, how you market it, it’s really up to your creativity!

Lastly, find a good support system and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
