Cheerio Christmas Day 8: Bymamatay

On Cheerio Christmas Day 8, our team’s super excited to feature Bymamatay! A simple shop started locally by a mother-daughter duo, each piece is intrinsic and also made with a whole bunch of love. Hazel, daughter of Mamatay, showcases the work of Mamatay’s passion and shares it with the rest of the world - and the rest is history.

Mamatay has been making jewellery for Hazel since she was young. From crochet bags, handphone accessories, earrings, necklaces to bracelets, Hazel has always been blessed with a huge bundle of them! Mamatay has always dreamt of selling her handcrafted goods, but never extended beyond her friends and neighbours. Today, we speak to the mother-daughter duo to find out more.

Q: How did you first start, and what were your goals?

A: Last year marked the first time we managed to a flea at a local Marketplace. All the proceedings went to 3 charity organisations and that was how we started our small business! “Keep the earrings affordable” - that has always been what Mamatay stands by.

Q: How has 2019 been for your business, and what are you looking forward to in 2020?

A: 2019 has been a blessed journey for Mamatay and I. We just started out less than a year and we have received a lot of love and support from people from all walks of life. I am looking forward to how our earrings business can grow and evolve next year.

Q: What are the greatest joys and challenges running this business?

A: One of the greatest joys would definitely be when customers walk up to our booths and we hear them exclaim, “Oh Mamatay!”. That’s when Mamatay knows that she has expanded from selling to just her friends and our neighbours, to strangers who recognize our brand.

There were a lot of challenges! Initially, it was a lot about taking a leap of faith in believing that there will be people out there who might like our story and in turn, Mamatay’s works. Now that the business has begun to take off a little, our biggest challenge is sustainability; ensuring Mamatay is getting enough rest while I juggle a full time job and the business after work.

Q: Out of all the products you retail, which is your personal favourite and why?

A: My personal favourite is none other than Mamatay’s Collection. They are sewn on bead by bead personally and also, seed beads are really light on the ears too! I can wear them the entire day without realising that they are there!

Q: What would you say to someone who’s looking to start their own business?

A: The first step on taking that leap of faith to own a business is definitely the hardest but the fulfilment you get in return is immeasurable.

We absolutely love Mamatay’s craft, and we’re sure you would too! Hazel and Mamatay has kindly extended an offer to all of you this Christmas - quote <CEREALXMAMATAY> for 15% off all orders with a minimum of $30 spent! This promocode is valid through December, until 31st December 2019, 2359.
