Cheerio Christmas Day 15: Ludovica

It’s Cheerio Christmas Day 15, and today we’re happy to have Tara, the Founder of Ludovica, that specialises in demi-fine Italian handmade Sterling 925 Silver jewellery with us. Ludovica was launched in 2017, but Tara always had the intention to start this business more than 10 years ago! We speak with Tara to find out more about how she conceptualised this business and some of the challenges she face.

Q: How did you get your idea or concept for the business?

A: Back in 2002, when I was studying for my Masters in Milan, I was always impressed by how well-dressed Italians are. Their immaculate dressing seems effortless and everything is coordinated, down to their last piece of accessory. This is something that I was never exposed to growing up in Singapore.

Walking in the Duomo Area in Milan, there were many times I would stop and stare at well-dressed Italians. I’ve learnt over the years, that jewellery is very important to Italians; it is what reveals their personality and completes their look. I wanted to offer the same quality handmade Italian jewellery to women in Singapore and allow them to sharpen their art of accessorizing.

Q: What are the greatest joys and challenges running this business?

A: Some of the greatest joys would be when the quality of our jewellery far exceeds the expectations of our customers and when these customers pay compliments to our collection. Very often, we offer designs that are hard to find in the local market and most customers find our jewellery a refreshing change to what’s usually available.

One of the greatest challenges would be our lack of a physical retail space, which would allow customers to touch and see for themselves the quality of our pieces. Pictures can be limiting in many aspects, and very often the beauty of our pieces cannot be truly conveyed in Instagram pictures. We certainly hope to change this in the very near future.

Q: Out of all the products you retail, which is your personal favourite and why?

A: It’s difficult to choose a favourite piece, since every piece in our collection are specially selected and I love them all. Depending on my mood, I like to change up my jewellery to match my outfit and the occasion. I usually prefer simple and elegant pieces for weekdays, such as this pair of earrings that exudes elegance and adds a touch of style to any office attire.

For weekends, I tend to go for fun and quirky pieces, such as this pineapple necklace. I enjoy playing with pops of colours to match my outfits and this piece is definitely eye-catching as it is such an unusual pendant.

Q: What would you say to someone who’s looking to start their own business?

A: It’s a long and often lonely road. Therefore, be sure to surround yourself with supportive friends and family.

I definitely could not have made it this far without the encouragement and help from my family and friends. Starting a new business takes a lot of patience and courage, and the motivation has to come mostly from the passion within. You have to believe in it and set your eyes on the right goals.

We’re also running a giveaway with Tara on Instagram - so head over to our IG to win yourself a pair of earrings! If you’d like to shop for some Christmas presents (these make for amazing gifts), here’s where you can find Ludovica.
