Cheerio Christmas Day 10: Draw Make Snap

We’re at our 10th day of Cheerio Christmas! Today, we have with us Paige, the illustrator, designer and maker behind Draw Make Snap, otherwise known on Instagram over @drawmakesnap. Paige started her Instagram account in 2016 with the sole purpose of recording and sharing her illustrations, with no intention to start a business.

Today, Paige does commissioned projects and sells her illustrated products. We speak to her to find out more about how Draw Make Snap has changed over the past 3 years.

Q: Tell us more about the story behind your business!

A: After starting my Instagram account in 2016 to share my illustrations, I started making custom illustration pieces for my family and friends, mainly dabbling in birthday cards. Come 2017, I illustrated and designed a 2017 monthly planner. It was a personal project, and was not-for-sale, however, I distributed it for giveaways, as Christmas gifts, and gave them to my friends. The response was great and that was really encouraging!

Mid 2018, I took on my very first paid-commissioned job, which was also a birthday card. Subsequently, a few other commissioned projects came along and that’s how the business started. I also had the honour of joining two consecutive pop-ups with Public Garden, and was even more encouraged by the positive response from customers!

For now, I’m looking forward to illustrate more, launch more new products, and have more pop-ups. I will also be at Public Garden on the 21/22 December! The business has definitely come a long way since our first Public Garden pop-up.

Q: Is your business idea tied to any personal story?

A: Right from the beginning, and even until now, @drawmakesnap is meant to be a platform to share the good stuff - think positivity, words of encouragement and motivation. We all have our own struggles at different stages of our lives (myself inclusive, of course), and I hope that my illustrations can bring a smile to someone’s heart!

Q: What are some of your greatest joys and challenges?

A: The greatest joy, and what keeps me going, is when people come up to me during pop-ups and tell me that my illustrations really touched their hearts, or served as a timely encouragement or motivation. Little do they know that it really warms my heart to hear that too!

Challenges wise, I’m still trying to find a good balance between quality and pricing. It is my goal to eventually run this business full-time, and I even have the thoughts of having a brick-and-mortar store so that I can interact with customers in person! For now, online and occasional pop-ups are still good, until I find the right balance.

Q: What would you say to someone who is looking to start their own business?

A: I would say, to start a business when you’re holding a full-time job, so at least you don’t need to worry about your bills, and money will not become your sole motivating factor. I also think it is very important to follow fellow businesses, and to learn from them - I even think it is good to make friends with other small businesses, but you have to be sincere about it.
